Mike Jahrling wasn’t actively looking for a new job when he was recruited to OpenWorks two years ago, but after learning more about the company and everything it had to offer, he realized a career at OpenWorks encompassed everything he’d been looking for. Here, Mike talks us through his experience with the company, and why he feels that they’re the employer of choice.
Q: What is your position at OpenWorks and how long have you been with the company?
A: Currently I am the acting regional director at the Chicago office. I have been with the company for just over 2 years.
Q: What are your job responsibilities, or what does a typical day look like for you at your job?
A: My day currently revolves around going on appointments with the sales crew to ensure best practices. In addition to that, we go over our previous call blitz while preparing for the next one. We also go over all bids together, so we can put together the most competitive options. On the operations side, I assist the operations team by putting together plans to help troubled accounts.
Q: What led you to working for OpenWorks?
A: I came to OpenWorks because of my previous working relationship with Division Vice President, Pat Tumilty. I wasn’t necessarily looking for a job at the time, but it had many of the things I was looking for (outside sales, room for growth, great compensation), and I also enjoyed my time working with Pat. I have had both outside and inside sales jobs and being on the road all day is just as exhausting as being in the office all day and I enjoyed the combination of these two.
I have been promoted twice in the two years that I have been here at OpenWorks. My first promotion came from moving from Account Executive to Senior Account Executive. A year later, I was promoted from SAE to Acting Regional Director. This is a main reason why I have stuck with OpenWorks because one, they give me the opportunity to grow and take on new challenges. Reason number two is they promoted me based on performance. While initially upset when I was not promoted the first time because I felt I could handle the director role, I did not have the numbers to prove it. The second I reached the numbers to get promoted, I was promoted. This gave me a sense of accomplishment and faith in the company that they would be honest with me and promote me when I proved myself. I know going forward that I will not be passed up for another opportunity if I have the numbers.
Q: What do you love about your job?
A: I really enjoy being in front of customers and selling them on myself as well as OpenWorks. I like finding what makes customer’s tick and explaining how we can solve their issues.
Q: What do you love about working for OpenWorks?
A: I love the people. Everyone is willing to help each other whenever someone is in need. I also love the opportunity to grow here, as I have been promoted twice in the two years I have been there. Each day is a challenge, but at the end of the day it is a rewarding feeling. My favorite thing about OpenWorks is the honesty I received from day one. There were no surprises for me when I started this job. Even on the days that were a struggle, I never felt as if I regretted taking the job.
Q: What makes OpenWorks the employer of choice?
A: So many things. OpenWorks has a systematic approach for being successful and if you follow it, you will be successful. Not only do they give us the tools and system, but they also work with us to be successful. We have a ramp up period, ongoing training and mentors to help us along the way. I have never had a sales company provide as much training for me as OpenWorks does. They truly invest in their people because they understand that if they make their employees happy, we in return will make our customers happy, which makes OpenWorks profitable. The other thing that is great is if you are doing a great job here and hit your numbers, OpenWorks will give you the freedom to plan your own schedule and work as you see fit to keep that success going. I have one of the best work/life balances out of all my friends and family. Finally, they recognize achievements. The company proudly sends emails for sales blast, appointments set, and rewards people for hitting their goals financially as well as providing extra bonuses, trips, and material items. It truly keeps me motivated the whole time.
Q: Is there anything coming up that you’re excited about in your job or for OpenWorks in general?
A: I am excited about how fast we have grown as a company. When I started here we were in six markets and have more than doubled in size in two years. I want to see how fast we grow and where this company will be in two more years.
