Q&A with Michael Kim: Account Executive at OpenWorks

michael-kimMichael Kim was brought on as our newest Account Executive for OpenWorks in the Austin, Texas market. Since starting his new role in June, Michael has been a valuable asset to our team, helping to build up business in this new and exciting area for OpenWorks. Though he has only been with us for a few months now, Michael is already settling in to his new position as a valued OpenWorks employee. We sat down with Michael to find out why he loves his job so much.

Q: How did you get started with OpenWorks?
A: I was hired just over two months ago. I had been unemployed and going on job interviews for quite some time when I found this opportunity at OpenWorks on a job search site. OpenWorks’ mission statement and core values really stood out to me. I applied for the job, and finally found a perfect fit with OpenWorks.

Q: What is your job at OpenWorks?
A: I am the account executive for the Austin area. It’s a brand new market for us, and we’re just starting to get the Austin office together.

Q: What did you do before that?
A: I’ve been in sales for almost my entire life – I started in financial services then went on to sales management. For the past eight years I was a franchise owner in Richmond, VA. I decided it was time for a change and moved to Austin in 2009 to work in the vacation rental industry. From there I found an opportunity at a start-up gamification company, which sold to Microsoft just four months later. I took some time off to refocus my career, and that’s when I found OpenWorks.

Q: What attracted you to OpenWorks?
A: The company is well-established (It’s been around for 33 years) but they’re now going through rapid expansion and growth. I think that kind of mirrors my own career – I am established as a professional, but ambitious and hungry for new challenges. I am always looking to grow as an employee.

Q: And is this job everything you hoped for?
A: Definitely! OpenWorks is extremely supportive of all its employees, no matter what position you are in. They are really focused on hiring the right people for the job, and once you are hired they work with you every step of the way to help you achieve your career goals within the company. During training, they even had all the department heads come talk to me about their story, how they started, what they do, and really helped me determine the path I need to take to get where I want to be.

Q: What do you love about your job?
A: We’re truly building things up from ground zero here in Austin. I love that we get to own this job – to build it up and make it great. We are working hard to achieve our goals, but the things we do every day in this job truly matter. I can see the results and witness the power of what we are doing for OpenWorks and the Austin market. I don’t feel like just another number here.
